Daily Reading Folder
What we do at school:
- Each morning our parent helper or aide takes the folders from the chair bags and puts them in a tub for me.
- During my lunch or when children are at a special class
- (Art, Music or P.E.), I go through each folder.
- I look to see if the parent has helped the child to practice the book I sent home.
- If the parent has checked the box that says the child is ready for a new book, I will put a new book in the folder.
- From time to time, I will check the reading and comprehension and decide if we need to change your child’s at home reading level.
- I have made copies of the take home books available in our classroom. Your child will have the opportunity to read and practice these books during free times.
What to do at home:
- Help you child practice reading the book from the folder.
- Remind your child to point to each word on the page and say what that word is.
- You may want to discuss what the book is about, take an extra look at punctuation, or look for words that begin with a certain sound.
- Then you will ask your child to do the “letter cheer”. This is also in the folder. Later in the year you will practice lists of words.
- **When you feel that your child has a good understanding of the book, check the box indicating that you would like a new book.
- Keep the books in a special place to practice later and to read to family and friends that may stop by.
- Return the folder to your child’s chair bag. Have your child bring the bag back to school the next day.
