Ways to Help a Child Learn to Print Their Name
- Have the child use a highlighter pen to trace over the letters in the name.
- Create a name for the child to feel with things such as sandpaper letters, yarn letters, bean letters, etc.
- Make a dotted line pattern for the child to trace.
- Fill a cookie sheet with salt and have child practice printing name in the salt.
- Cut the letters in the name apart and have the child put them back together.
- Make magnet letters available for the child to put together the name. Begin with only the letters needed for the name and add others that the child must discard.
- Cover a cookie sheet with shaving cream or pudding and let the child spell out the name.
- Have child learn to spell the name to a familiar tune.
- You spell the name to the child correctly and incorrectly and have the child tell you when you are write or wrong.
- Use a wipe off board to practice printing the name.
- Have the child make the first letter and you make the rest. Then have the child make the first two letters and you make the rest. Then have the child make the first three letters and you make the rest. Continue until the child is able to print the name alone.
- In all of the following begin with just what is needed for the name and then add others for the child to discard:
- Provide alphabet blocks for child to form the name.
- Provide letter stampers and washable ink for the child to form the name.
- Provide precut letters for the child to form the name.
- Make magnet letters available for the child to put together the name.
